Project Management Office
...............................................................................................
Working in the project management office is a chance to be at the hub of a project. The PMO (get used to the acronyms) supports senior project management by keeping tabs on project progress, monitoring status and organising key logistics (meetings, accommodation and so on).
It is the closest you can get to a dogsbody role in consulting, and it can get busy. You could be producing status reports or tracking deliverables one minute and arranging taxis the next. Mostly however, you'll be doing a lot of nagging to make sure people are doing what they are supposed to.
However, it is a great first role because it allows you to have a very broad overview across the whole project, giving you the chance to see how everything fits together.
Pros
- Exposure to senior management
- Good overview of project activity
- Varied workload
Cons
- Mostly administrative tasks
- Relatively little room to impress
- Very dependent on others for outcomes
Where consultancy becomes clear.
