Program Testing
...............................................................................................
Ah, testing. Almost universally hated, technical testing is a classic first role for new consultants (particularly those not working in the pure strategy houses like Bain and McKinsey). This is mostly because no-one else wants to do it.
Essentially, testing is as it sounds - ensuring that the technical solution implemented by your company works. Testing comes in a number of forms; user acceptance (to check the client is happy with the functionality), functional (to check the program is actually working as it should) and so on. It is tedious and it is repetitive.
It is also, however, a great opportunity to learn a program inside out and become a subject matter expert; a very useful thing to be when moving up the career ladder on to that next role.
Pros
- Chance to gain detailed knowledge
- Early opportunity to produce key deliverables (i.e. responsibility)
Cons
- Repetitive
- Often dull and frustrating
- Long hours when approaching deadlines
Where consultancy becomes clear.
